About Tilba

The National Trust village of Central Tilba, with the backdrop of Mount Dromedary, is about 20 kilometres south of Narooma. It is one of those special places for cyclists to visit. It’s about the same distance from Bermagui. The village has been listed as one of the top twenty historic sites in Australia.

While the village has a permanent population of only around ninety residents, it holds a lot of interest for tourists. A walk to the nearby lookout will give visitors to the area a glimpse of the surrounding countryside, with the rolling green hills of the Tilba area, the valleys, and the surrounding mountains. Go along the laneway beside the Dromedary Hotel, and through the gate. While the lookout is on private property, there is public access to the lookout. Please stay on the track, and do not disturb the horses. From the lookout, it is easy to see why the Tilba area is valued so highly as prime agricultural land.

There are lots of things to see and do there. There are galleries, craft shops, cafes and coffee shops, a bakery, a leather goods shop, gift shops, lolly shop, a candle shop that sells quality Australian candles, antique shop, and others selling interesting items for the home, and a woodturning gallery.

On Saturday mornings, there are markets, where it is possible to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

Allow several hours to have a good look around the village.

If you are making the Tilba area the centre of your cycling holiday, there is plenty of reasonably priced accommodation, including a hotel, bed and breakfasts, and farm cottages not far from the village.

There is a visitors information centre at Bates General Store in Central Tilba. Call in for maps and information about the area.
